AfGAC at Nairobi Arbitration Week 2025: Advancing Dialogue on Sustainability in Arbitration

Afgac at Nairobi Arbitration Week

During Nairobi Arbitration Week 2025, the African-German Arbitration Cooperation (AfGAC) proudly showcased its cross-continental partnership while engaging in future-oriented discussions on sustainability in arbitration. Hosted by the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration (NCIA), the event marked a significant step in fostering deeper regional and international collaboration. Strengthening Cooperation Across Regions

Strengthening Interregional Cooperation

From March 17 to 21, 2025, AfGAC participated in Nairobi Arbitration Week under the timely theme, “Arbitration in the Age of Sustainability.” Organized by our partner, the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration (NCIA), the event convened a vibrant assembly of arbitration practitioners, institutions, and thought leaders from across Africa and beyond.

AfGAC used the opportunity to highlight the strength of its collaborative model – bringing together five key institutions: NCIA (Kenya), the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC, Rwanda), the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA, Egypt), the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce (HCC, Germany), and the LawCom.Institute (Germany). Together, these institutions exemplify a dynamic model of transcontinental partnership aimed at advancing arbitration practice across borders.

A Shared Commitment to Sustainable Arbitration

Throughout the week, AfGAC actively participated in panels, workshops, and informal exchanges that explored arbitration’s evolving role in promoting sustainability. Discussions spanned a wide range of topics – from reducing the carbon footprint of arbitration proceedings to aligning institutional practices with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

The event provided a rich space for reflection and dialogue, allowing AfGAC and its partners to contribute to global conversations on how arbitration can adapt to emerging sustainability imperatives. Sessions on institutional reform, climate-related disputes, and digital innovation highlighted the urgency of ensuring that dispute resolution mechanisms remain responsive and future-proof.

Building Knowledge and Cross-Border Networks

Nairobi Arbitration Week offered AfGAC an invaluable platform to deepen its engagement with African and international arbitration communities. It was an opportunity to reinforce existing partnerships, initiate new collaborations, and exchange insights on best practices across jurisdictions.

AfGAC remains committed to fostering mutual learning and practical cooperation between African and European institutions. Participation in events like Nairobi Arbitration Week supports this mission – ensuring that diverse perspectives inform the development of inclusive and resilient arbitration frameworks.
